What's New?

Before the Super Bowl we used a great activity called 'Football Buddy' from A Cupcake For A Teacher. This was a great activity to do because it linked together math and writing. We made predictions as to who we thought would win and we wrote them down. After each student had written down their prediction we graphed the results so that we could better organize the data. The kids got very excited to see the graph growing. Looking over the results we realized that overall the class thought the Seattle Seahawks would win the Super Bowl. This was such a great activity and the kids seemed to really enjoy doing it. 

Since groundhogs day was on a weekend students made predictions on whether or not they thought the groundhog would see his shadow on Groundhogs day before the month of February began. For morning work students made a groundhog and then they put the groundhog on a side of the chart. I got the graphs for this activity free from A Cupcake For The Teacher. I created the templates for the groundhogs and I got the chart idea from Pinterest! 

After we graphed the results we discovered that most people in the class thought the the groundhog would not see his shadow.

To start the month of February off I spent sometime after school one day and decorated the classroom door to surprise the kids! I made each kid into a sweethearts candy box! I got the idea from Pinterest but then changed it a bit and made it my own. I cannot wait to see the kids reactions!

Mathmania and Valentines Day

February 14th was Valentines Day and Mathmania day here at Wilbur Elementary.

Pete The Cat

In my class we did a lesson on graphing for Mathmania. We first read the story Pete The Cat I Love My White Shoes. Students LOVED this book and were singing the song from the story all day long! After reading the story students made their own Pete the Cat but were able o pick their own color shoes for their cat. Once students were finished creating their cat they came to the carpet and we graphed what color shoes each student chose. The activity went really well and the cats came out very cute.

For Mathmania students also got to do activities with the other kindergarten teachers on the Green/Yellow side of the building. The activities were very cute, and the kids loved the one Ms. Maloy did the most. They had to count 10's units in a ten-frame and then race back to their group in a mini car made from a box to give their answer! Adorable.

Hearts, Candy, Friendship, and Valentines!

The Valentine containers that students made for their family project were just adorable and very creative. Here are pictures of some of them.

We also did a candy heart graphing activity. At the beginning of the year students had a very hard time with this kind of activity. However, this time students ROCKED this activity!

100th Day of School!!

The 100th day of school was February 12th and was super exciting!!! When students walked in they had to go through a giant zero that was placed in front of the classroom door.

I was the queen of the 100th day and the first thing I did was crown all my students!

I took pictures of students holding a giant picture frame saying they are now 100 days smarter!

Then we made pictures of ourselves if we were 100 years old! Those picture came out very funny.

 

 

We made 100 day pizzas where students had to color the toppings according to the color code. Then they had to count how many of each topping was on the pizza. In total there was 100 toppings on the pizza.

We also jumped in place for 100 seconds. I found this great video on You Tube that the students LOVED. I ended up making it a contest.



Then we put 100 spots on a giant monster. I got the idea from Jamie Mayas over at Mrs. Maya's Kinders. 

We wrote about what we would do with $100, and we painted 100 gum balls in a gum ball machine.

A Cupid Comes to Play!

This month you have probably been hearing about the little Cupid that has come to visit our classroom this month. We named him Icing Twinkle Toes and he looks like a pink dragon.Though most kids think he resembles a hippo! Our Cupid also is pink and has glittery wings.

On our first day with our Cupid we learned through a note he left us, that he came from Cupid land and that if we are nice, kind, respectful, and loving to one another he will get magic to move at night! The only rule is that you cannot touch the little Cupid otherwise he will loose his magic. Our Cupid was on top of the SMART board, projector, on top of the lights, hanging from the ceiling, on top of the computer, and today he was on top of the world! Literally we found him on top of our class globe!!

We also took our own Cupid pictures (adorable) and found out our own Cupid names! Some of the names were just too funny! I posted pictures of all this on the class photo site.

Along with our names students got to practice how to be a cupid by dressing up as one. The pictures of each child dressed up were very cute. I will post individual student pictures on the class photo site but here is one of our hallway display.

PAWS Program

We were very excited to have the PAWS program come to Wilbur Elementary on February 4th. The PAWS for Reading program allows children to read aloud to a therapy dog in order to improve reading and communication skills. The dog that came to visit us was named Teddy and he was a golden retriever  With the size of the kindergarten student population at Wilbur we had to have the PAWS program do a large group reading of a story instead of a one-on-one reading with a child and the dog. The book that was read was titled If You Give A Dog A Donut by Laura Numeroff. Even though the activity was done in a whole group setting the students didn't seem to mind. They were excited to learn about something new, specifically therapy dogs.
